A survey on what engineering students understand about their learning strategies during the first year of college is presented. The data collection tools for the survey include Pittsburg Freshman Engineering Attitude survey, learning and study skills inventory (LASSI), learning type measure (LTM), and bi-weekly questions developed by the authors which students answered throughout the first year. The LASSI and LTM are designed to help students understand and identify the ways they learn. The survey shows that half of the students who have started out in engineering learn from straightforward data, logical thinking and problem solving.
