Abstract

Copyright © 2004 IFAC. A control strategy analysis for the operation of a copper smelter and two different acid plants is performed. The gas, reach in sulphur dioxide and dust, is generated by the combined operation of two Teniente Converters and four Peirce Smith converters. The gas is treated to reach certain temperature and solid contents, and then distributed into two sulphuric acid plants, where aier a cleaning stage; the sulphur dioxide is catalytically converted into sulphur trioxide that finally is absorbed in concentrated SUlphuric acid. The main goal of this project is to increase the acid plants availability, and therefore to increase copper production, by decreasing the occurrence of environmental events and acid plant shutdowns. Preliminary results are discussed.
