This paper presents the studies on the application of two innovative technologies for integrating with a field excavator. One is a spatial positioning system (SPS) which is used to measure a 3-dimensional spatial position. The other is an AutoCAD display system which, integrated with resolvers on the excavator as well as the SPS, offers the real time position and orientation information for the operator. Therefore, the total excavation operation and pipe-laying can be displayed under the AutoCAD to help the human operator visualize what is taking place in the field. Experiments have been conducted and they will be presented in the later part of this paper.
