The role of uncertainties in performance-based design of dynamical systems

Performance-based design involves the calculation of design parameters to meet some performance criteria, with corresponding specified rehabihty over the service life. In this work, the effect of system uncertainties on the performance, robustness as well as the effectiveness of performance-based designs is investigated. Uncertain system parameters are modelled as random variables with a prescribed joint probability density function, while the uncertain load time history is modelled by a stochastic process. An uncertain linear structural system subjected to a stochastic excitation is presented to illustrate the ideas set forth.
